Conflict resolution and crisis prevention are two main objectives of German foreign policy. As a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2019–20, Germany put these topics at the top of its agenda. An informal and flexible meeting format – Arria-formula meetings – can serve as a tool for achieving these goals. Germany should use this format more frequently in addressing impending crises and conflicts in which the Council is blocked, as well as to strengthen cooperation with countries and actors of the Global South.

Deutschland im UN-Sicherheitsrat: Arria-Formel-Sitzungen als Instrument der Krisenbewältigung und -prävention
Krisenbewältigung und -prävention sind zentrale Ziele deutscher Außenpolitik. Dies betont Deutschland auch als nichtständiges Mitglied im UN-Sicherheitsrat 2019–20. Ein informelles und flexibles Sitzungsformat, die so genannten „Arria-Formel-Sitzungen“, können ein Instrument sein, um diese Ziele zu erreichen. Deutschland sollte das Format mehr als bisher nutzen, um schwelende Krisen und Konflikte, in denen der Rat blockiert ist, zu thematisieren und die Kooperation mit Ländern und Akteuren des globalen Südens zu intensivieren.
