Radikalisierung und Extremismus sowie deren Prävention werden seit einigen Jahren in Deutschland kontrovers diskutiert. Obgleich die Phänomene in diesem Themenfeld sehr unterschiedlich sein können, besteht doch Einigkeit, dass es sich bei Radikalisierung um einen Prozess handelt, der auf vielen verschiedenen Ebenen stattfindet und durch unterschiedlichste Faktoren begünstigt oder verhindert werden kann. Unsere Blogserie „Gesellschaft Extrem“ hat Einblicke in das Themenfeld geboten und sowohl Perspektiven aus der Wissenschaft, als auch aus der Praxis anhand von 21 Beiträgen erläutert. Nicht nur einzeln, sondern auch im Gesamtbild der Serie stellen die Beiträge sehr prägnant die vielseitigen Herausforderungen von individueller und kollektiver Radikalisierung sowie von Radikalisierungsprävention und deren Evaluation dar.

Germany’s Pluralistic Society and its Contested Religious Heritage
A new homeland ministry, further debates on Islam and Germany, new places for crucifixes in public buildings – all these political acts show that exclusive identity constructions are perceived as a way to be electorally successful. But they also blur the boundary between politics and almost satirical symbolism-oriented acts. The current politics are part of a political communication that seems to add fuel to the ongoing sociopolitical debate on religious and cultural diversity. However, in a pluralistic country like Germany, a calm and thoughtful political communication is required to increase societal cohesion and not let a presumed heritage determine the shared values of our society.
Benefit Concert in the Manchester Arena: The Terror Threat and Peaceful Protests
On 22 May 2017, the suicide bomber Salman Abedi killed 22 people and injured many more after an Ariana Grande concert in the Manchester Arena. On 9 September 2017, the Manchester Arena was reopened with a benefit show labelled as a “We Are Manchester” concert. The concert’s aim was to raise money for a place of memorial for the victims of the attack. “We Are Manchester” is only one of the many peaceful responses to the attacks: In contrast to the heated debates on increasing security, they reveal different ways of standing together for a liberal and diverse society against the fear caused by terrorism.
